New report: Risk analysis for the use of propane gas bottles in buildings

In connection with the revision of the Norwegian regulations for the use of gas containers in buildings, RISE Fire Research has investigated the risk of using gas containers in buildings. In the current regulations this is not permitted.

Based on the analyses made we conclude that it might be permitted to use gas containers indoors if certain safety precautions have been taken. Some of these criteria that we recommend are that gas cylinders are stored in suitable storage rooms/cabinets and that they are connected to the consumer apparatus via open piping. In addition, we recommend that a maximum of 2 gas containers with a total volume up to 55 L are permitted to be stored indoors.

The project is sponsored by the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB). More information is available in the final report from the project.
